Angel is a gripping psychological thriller about revenge-seeking criminal Treverick, who is desperate to get back the little girl he kidnapped years ago.
“There was so much blood on the sheet and she reached a hand up to pull on the chain that shackled her to the bed every day.” These are the first lines of this gripping psychological thriller. You are immediately drawn into the gruesome and horrible story of baby girl Grace, born and abducted on Christmas Day 1995. Her parents, Lauren and Pilot Farmer have no idea that it will take more than 7 years before they will see their first-born baby again.
Yet this is not even the beginning because for that we have to go back to the year 1952 when Lauren’s mother Amy was a mere child, raped by a man identified as Treverick. In the prequel Beautiful (2015) we had learned that Treverick was sentenced to years in prison. His revenge was horrible: in 1995 he abducts newborn baby girl Grace and DI Jake Dunbar fails to bring the girl back to the Farmer family. Seven years later the Farmer family is extended with 6-year-old Olivia and baby boy Noah. When traumatised little girl Angel seeks shelter nearby, DCI Dunbar is shocked to find that she is Grace, abducted years ago. They assume Treverick wants the girl back and seeks revenge on the Farmer family. DI Dunbar presumes Treverick will be furious she escaped and desperate to avenge the whole of the Farmer family. The pressure is building up, leaving the strained family in constant fear for their lives and that of their children.
Will the family ever be safe as long as Treverick is alive or does he intend to kill them all, one by one? The Farmer family take no risks and, just like seven years ago, hire Mark Carter’s security men to protect and guard the children, parents and grandparents. While the police are desperate to find Treverick before he has a chance of killing them all, they seem to be at a disadvantage as Treverick somehow is aware of every move they make, is able to ascertain the whereabouts of all the members of the Farmer family. Why would Treverick know everything and remain unseen? Once again the whole extended family is living in fear for their loved ones and Pilot Farmer solemnly swears the monster will never again harm Grace or any of the other children. DI Dunbar is determined to get the bastard behind bars so the Farmer family can live in peace, even if it is the last thing he will ever do. Find out what will happen …
After so many suspenseful chapters, where you could hardly put the book away for fear of missing anything, to me, the final chapter was somewhat of an anticlimax and I would have loved to have a little more insight into the breath-taking and bloodcurdling events happening right under your nose. That having said, it is impossible not to be drawn in by the intricate plot and feel both the urge to finally be able to apprehend the devil in disguise as well as the need to know the Farmer family can breathe safely again. Anita Waller has excellently written a thrilling, gruesome and gripping storyline with a plot twist that will haunt you and leaves you aching for the vulnerable little girl that suffered so much.
