Wow! Game Point is simply mindblowing! The toughest case of his career lies before DCI Cyril Bennett as he is desperate to catch a most vicious murderer
The Harrogate Crime Series #4
Detective Chief Inspector Cyril Bennett is back in the office. The detective with his impeccable appearance and need for perfection, be it a tidy desk or a cup of coffee (not a mug, thank you!) is up for yet another brainteaser! Harrogate beware because this means one thing – danger is in the air! If only DCI Bennett could foresee what he will be up against. If only the clock could be turned back … Already a cold-blooded killer is in the vicinity because the murdered body of a man has been found, minus his fingertips. So begins a case that will haunt DCI Bennett.
In the Prologue we witness Cyril Bennett in France, guilt-ridden and devastated, reliving poignant memories. Something dark happened, so horrific that it turned Cyril Bennett’s world upside down. He has no words, only knows he has to find a way to cope – to pick up the pieces of his life. It was only half a year ago that a male victim was found without his fingertips. Then the pathologist, Dr Julie Pritchett, told him the missing body parts had been retrieved from the victim’s stomach.
What kind of a sick psychopath would cut off a man’s fingertips and force his prey to eat them? It is early days in the investigation but Bennett’s team with both DS David Owen and Liz Graydon will soon be confronted with yet another murdered body, this time female. Valerie Atkins is on her way home from a girls’ night out when she is captured and dies a horrible and excruciatingly painful death at the hands of a killer, whose voice she recognised.
DCI Bennett is certain that the bicycle spoke, shoved through the letterbox of Valerie’s and her boyfriends’ home, is from the bicycle of the male victim and therefore that a connection exists between the two murders. When DS Liz and Owen find Valerie’s hidden metal box, its contents indicate a double life full of drugs, alcohol and sex orgies captured on tape. How would this lead to her death? Valerie also tried to make a career as a journalist with investigative, sometimes controversial, documentaries according to her boss, Frederick Grant.
The investigation that follows includes antique hatpins, DCI Bennett’s love for the arts, dark criminals and sex tapes and always, somewhere near, the bicycle spokes. The case gets more discouraging with every new piece of evidence uncovered and every new angle of investigation but still, they have no clue as to the dark and sick mind of the murderer playing an abhorrent game of life and death.
Game Point is an impressive and brilliantly construed thriller that made a deep impact! I love it! With Game Point Malcolm Hollingdrake reaches a new high in The Harrogate Crime Series and I am in awe at how he succeeded in writing such an ingenious plot and enticing page-turner. The author comes back with a vengeance in the fourth detective novel and it blew me away. I loved it and hated it – read the thriller and you will understand!
The novel is excellently written, the personal lives of the Police Officers and the Pathologist are entwined with the case under investigation up to a point… No more can be divulged here, but I will comment that the book was read in one session because I just could not put it down. Without a second thought, I would classify Game Point and the series highly recommended!
As with the previous books in the series, Game Point can be read as a stand-alone but because of the characters’ development and referrals to earlier cases, I would advise you to read the first three books before moving on to this one!

About the Author
If you were born in a library … no wonder you have it in you to be an author one day! That is what happened to Malcolm Hollingdrake and although he took a circuitous route via a teaching career, once challenged to do so, he started writing vigorously. Malcolm has written a number of successful short stories and is currently working on the fifth book in the DCI Bennett Series. Did you know that Malcolm enjoys collecting works from Northern artists and attending art auctions? Yes, just like his protagonist Cyril Bennett! Malcolm Hollingdrake cherishes his home county, which is why his series of crime novels are set in Harrogate.
