In Harm’s Way – Owen Mullen

‘In Harm’s Way’ is an expertly crafted and captivating psychological thriller! Fascinating characters, a viciousness that gives you goosebumps and makes you anxious to read on… Shocking, brutal, gripping.

A man wants a tour of an abandoned house. But he has no intention of buying it… We are privy to a few of his vicious thoughts and shiver. “The decision was already made. It was perfect.”

Meet the siblings of the Darroch family: Adele, Gavin and Mackenzie. All three are married, to say ‘happily’ would be an overstatement. Adele and Blair don’t see eye to eye anymore and the tension rises, the birth of their daughter Alice has a huge impact on Gavin and Monica, and Mackenzie and Derek seem to be heading for a divorce. Mackenzie tries to cut down drinking – but we see that it isn’t exactly working.. A family dinner to celebrate Adele’s birthday sees a stormy ending. Their past and Mackenzie’s drunken behaviour creates a rift in the family. No one believes her story about a man stalking her…

When shortly after Derek reports his wife has gone, the family sympathises with him. Adele and Monica are fierce in showing their loyalty to Derek and blaming Mackenzie for not even telling them where she went. Brian, Adele’s husband, one of Mackenzie’s most loyal supporters, still tries to calm things down but his wife will not have it. But Gavin, realising that his sister left all her clothes behind, has doubts,,, Whilst the family is falling apart, emotions run high and sides are being chosen, there is no sign of life of Mackenzie. Has she walked away, not only from her husband but also from her family or is there something sinister going on, threatening Mackenzie’s life? Is she in danger and if so, who will help her? Who cares?

My Thoughts

Knowing Owen Mullen and his books featuring detectives with a flaw, this book will come as a surprise – but what a great one! This is an expertly crafted psychological thriller and the author draws you in with his writing style and dialogue. LIke me, you will find yourself bound to like – or dislike – characters and pick sides. I had one or two, maybe three favourite characters; Mackenzie, a strong woman struggling with her life, and well, I have a soft spot for grumpy, ‘seasoned’ detectives and DS Andrew Geddes is just that guy!

This is a novel with a viciousness and a shocking, cold-blooded violence on the one side, entwined with a psychological novel about a family and relationships and how we all form our opinions but, in fact, have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. About prejudices and personal struggles but most of all, about appearances. ‘In Harm’s Way’ is an intriguing, shocking, captivating, and entertaining.

About the Author

Owen Mullen Author Image

When he was ten, Owen Mullen won a short story competition and didn’t write anything else for almost forty years. In between he graduated from Strathclyde University with a Masters in Tourism and a degree in Marketing, moved to London, led a life full of travelling and worked as a rock musician, session singer and songwriter, he had a hit record in Japan with a band he refuses to name; on occasion he still performs. He returned to Scotland to run a management consultancy and a marketing agency. A gregarious recluse, he and his wife, Christine, split their time between Glasgow – where the Charlie Cameron books are set – and their villa in the Greek Islands. The first story he wrote after all those years he classifies as “bloody terrible“. Nevertheless, he kept going. And with success. His moral: “find something you’re good at and stick with it.
