The Puppet Show – M.W. Craven

Engrossing, captivating, and gripping! Love ‘The Puppet Show’ introducing DS Washington Poe – a man, living in rural Cumbria, suspended and not ready to go back to work until a gruesome murder is somehow connected to Poe…

Washington Poe #1

The Book

A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District’s prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless. When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation, he wants no part of . . .

Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant, but socially awkward, civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it.

As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he’s ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive …

My Thoughts

What an engrossing thriller! LOVED it! The first chapter draws you right in, the cruelty and gruesomeness let you know there must be a strong motive for the brutal killing – killings I should say!

What makes this detective thriller stand out is, that we don’t start with the detective and his team untangling a murder case but we find ourselves with the Serious Crime Analysis Section, with one of the team, Tilly Bradshaw, to be precise. She’s a brilliant character, I loved her! She’s autistic, has never been outside of the office, she can work magic with her computer and she is the one who discovers the one piece of evidence that draws Washington Poe into the case…

Washington Poe was a DI but is now on a suspension that is until DI Stephanie Flynn askes him to come back as her DS to find the Immolation Man haunting Cumbria burning men to death in Cumbria’s stone circles. Why he is the man for the job, we soon find out!

I loved the dynamic of the two police teams as well as Washington Poe and Stephanie Flynn, and especially the unique friendship growing between Tilly and Poe. Just warmed my heart. The story is fast-paced and multi-layered, the quest for the murderer(s) a difficult one with twists around every corner, the ending took me by surprise!

Don’t start this late at night because you will feel, like me, compelled to read on and on until you figured out who was responsible for the gruesome murders – and why. Engrossing, captivating, and gripping! I cannot wait for the next book in the series – boy what an intriguing start of Black Summer you’ll find at the end of the book!

Exciting, riveting, thrilling. I highly recommend The Puppet Show.

About the Author

M. W. Craven was born in Carlisle but grew up in Newcastle, running away to join the army at the tender age of sixteen.
