When The Waters Recede – Graham Smith

When The Waters Recede is an entertaining, at times gruesome and chilling but also captivating thriller! DI Harry Evans is back and boy, does his replacement, DI Cambridge need his assistance.. his former team most certainly does!

A DI Harry Evans Novel

A stolen car in the water – a man trapped inside. DC Lauren Phillips feels sorry for the man but as soon as the boot of the car is opened, her sympathy disappears and she knows, it is time to call in her colleagues of the Major Crimes Team. Why might you ask?

Perhaps the decapitated body in the trunk is a clue?! However, there is one person Lauren informs just before alerting her new DI, John Campbell – her old DI and a source of intelligence on the field of local crime: ex-DI Harry Evans. Of course, he knows who the murdered body belonged to…

How on earth DI Harry Evans managed to get assigned to this former team in a consultant role, is beyond everyone’s belief. But there he is and frankly, DI Campbell could do with someone who knows all the ins and outs of the Cumbrian crime scene. But even Harry Evans has no idea who the driver is and that search brings the team lots of frustration, into unknown territory and so much work, that they would forget there is still Jenny Fisher’s murder to solve.

A bitch in life, a saint now she is dead; the list of enemies is sheer endless but no one knows anyone who would consider her even remotely important enough to get brutally murdered. So why did she end up in the boot of a car with her head lying beside her body? And who is the driver? Has he killed her or did he work for a boss?

Whilst Harry Evans enjoys being part of the team again, he cannot help but worry about Lauren Phillips. Somehow, her behaviour has changed. Perhaps no one else noticed it but he most certainly does. He also realises she is way too stubborn to let him help her but, knowing Harry Evans like we do, there is no way in hell he will let the matter rest. His team – his family. Lauren, on the other hand, wonders why on earth DI Campbell would tolerate their former DI working with the team…

Soon, everyone is focussed on finding the killer before he might strike again. It looks and feels like a professional hit, not something the local thugs are capable of. Slowly but surely, they uncover new evidence, pointing in as many different directions as there are leads – from missing persons to violence, from extortion to plain stupidity, from low-life crooks to organised crime. Are these connected and if so, will they ever find out what the hell is going on?!

My Thoughts

This is a terrific thriller – I LOVE When The Waters Recede!  The author takes us with him on a bumpy ride, action-packed with twists around a few corners but also with such a wonderful group of characters. We get inside into the personal lives of Lauren and we see her struggling to take control, as does Harry but for different reasons…

Apart from feeling alive again after the death of his wife, he also is interested in letters from her family’s past. We cannot help but compare the two DIs and whichever has your preference, they are both, in their own way, intelligent, honourable men.

I love the banter going to-and-fro between about everyone – and the fact, that there is no easy solution but a thorough investigation, leaving no leads without ends, no theories easily discarded. As to the ending… I will refrain from saying anything but let’s just say I so look forward to the next book in the DI Harry Evans series!

When The Waters Recede is an action-packed, engaging, captivating and well-written thriller!
